Sebastian Vile
How does a Junior from Minnesota’s Tennis team end up playing for the Badgers his senior year?
Raised in Rochester, Minnesota as the son of 2 immigrants, Sebastian Vile found a love for his hometown college at a young age. His whole life, he was destined to be a Gopher.
During his career at Minnesota, Vile amounted over 30 wins. A consistent teammate that had found success as a doubles partner and in singles against powerful opponents, many of whom ranked, proving he belonged on the court.
Despite the success Vile and his teammates achieved over his first 3 years, COVID-19 and financial restrictions led to a change.
3 days into his junior year, Minnesota Athletics said Men’s Tennis would be discontinued.
3 years he gave to the school of his dreams, all for it to be cut short through a 10-minute Zoom call.
With lineups finalized for the following year, the chances of him making a roster the next season were slim. Transferring within the Big 10 had its restrictions, and challenges seemed to mount as Vile continued searching for a new home. Having conversations with schools throughout the country, Vile felt as though he hit a dead end.
Then, he received a call from Wisconsin, who already informed him of the unlikely chance he'd be able to join the team. To their surprise, the departure of 2 seniors opened the door for Vile to play for the Badgers.
There was another element in the mix he was unaware of. His Assistant Coach at Minnesota was interviewing to take up the Assistant job at Wisconsin. Sure enough, he would get the job, making Vile's assimilation into Wisconsin that much easier.
“Grateful”. When asked about his college tennis experience, Sebastian says, "Grateful." Sebastian’s unique journey opened his eyes to the opportunities he’s been fortunate enough to experience. After leaving Wisconsin’s rival, Vile experienced nothing but welcoming arms. The comforting Badger family has given Vile so much to be grateful for during his years at Wisconsin.
Next for Vile, he’ll be working in Sports Psychology in Tennis with the ITA. An incredible person, on and off the court, we can’t wait to see what Sebastian accomplishes next!
